This jar was created by Jugtown Pottery and made by Travis Owens. The fawn on the lid was made by Bayle Owens. The deer decoration was done by Pam Owens, using various slips, then the final glaze, called Soft Iron, was applied by Bobby Owens who does most of the glazing of pots at Jugtown; he is the brother of Vernon Owens. This piece was made using Stoneware clay from North Carolina, and was fired to 2350 degrees. *Courtesy of Rene Hellams.
This jar was made by Travis Owens. The inspiration for this piece is the classic Jugtown “Persian Jar”. The Busbees appreciated this ancient form, and it has become a staple in the Jugtown repertoire of shapes. The glaze contains copper, which is a volatile ingredient. It was place in an area of the kiln that varied from oxygen depleted to oxygen rich during the firing, which lead to the rich reds and subtle celadons. Courtesy of Rene Hellams.
